Prologue
Rayne was a Kie. She was built like a panther, but was different in almost any other way possible. Her muzzle was broad and striped, while her ears were large and slightly rounded. Her body was long and slender with pale gray fur. White stripes ran down her pelt like lightning in the morning sky, or a piece of cracked marble. Her tail was long and snake-like while her long, thin legs gave her height and speed. But nothing could compare to her eyes. The dark sapphire depths were filled with cleverness, curiosity and adventure. Hidden beneath, they brimmed with intelligence far beyond her age. She lived with her human, a young adult male. They spent their time in a cozy house on the outskirts of a small town. If the weather was right, he often took her down to a small river about a mile from the town, where he talked to her and filled her with the knowledge of his life and his terrible past. But what she was eager to learn the most about, was his gift. Her owner was different then most people. That’s why she was given to him as a tiny newborn, orphan cub. He had said that eventually, when she was older, she would be able to communicate with him through her mind; and this fascinated her, yet in a way frightened Rayne more then anything. He told her that her parents had been wild, great creatures, who also knew about humans, and the humans with gifts. He also told Rayne that her parents had left her at the edge of a village, so that she could have a chance to hone the gifts that she had been given. Rayne often fell asleep with the thought of her parents weighing heavily on her mind.
Rayne’s flank rose and fell in a rapid, pained movement. An unnaturally rough cough split through her lungs, leaving her young body shivering. The fur along her back crackled with dry sweat as she pulled her body into a sitting position and slowly opened her heavy eyes. Smoke billowed around her, thick, black and threatening. She slunk off the couch that she had spent the majority of the night on, and cowered against the hard floor. Fear made her heart pump too fast and her stomach clench painfully. Unclearly, she could make out flames on the opposite side of the living room, lapping hungrily at the wood floor and peeling the wallpaper. Rayne’s heart sank farther into her gut, as she realized that her only way out was in that direction. If she wanted to make it out alive, she was going to have to head right into the fire that was threatening her. With her eyes squinted, she steadily inched her way to the wall. Stopping just a step from the dancing red flames, she, as calmly as possible, searched for the way that would lead to her safety. A load crash sounded behind Rayne and she spun around with her ears pinned back. A thin stream of air escaped through her mouth as her eyes widened in horror. A wood support rod from the ceiling had collapsed from the heat of the inferno, sending up a cloud of ash and burning cinders. Hot sparks leapt at her face as they shot from the support rod; the dry wood feeding the flame. She gasped as a glowing splinter of wood shot at her face, burning away the fur on her right cheek with red hot fury. She pawed at her cheek in pain, trying to relieve the burning feeling, but she only succeeded in pushing the splinter farther in. Unconsciously, her struggles had brought her rear end closer to the flame and suddenly pain raced up her tail and through her spine. Rayne cried out; feeling the fire from the wall singe away the fur on the tip of her tail as it grew. Slowly she calmed herself and realized she needed to keep herself together if she wanted to leave this place with her life. She winced and once again began searching for the hallway. There! She pointed out in her mind as she saw the hallway looming before her in the haze from the fire. There was the hallway. She bounded toward it and leapt gracefully over a burning shard of wood and away from the living room that was now engulfed in flames. Her joy was short. The door at the end of the hallway, her only way out, was on fire also. The only way that she would be able to get out and into the surrounding forest, was through that door. Closing her large sapphire eyes she once again cowered against the floor. Suddenly she jumped up with a load cry and looked behind her. She had forgotten that hallway floor was carpeted and the fire had once again caught up to her. She was now trapped by the flames. They seemed to dance in their victory as they pressed closer in around her. She growled, not willing to surrender her life just yet. There was so much she still had to learn. “Where are my parents?” was one that quickly froze her mind. Rayne stood taller and roared. She roared at the fire for destroying her sanctuary. She roared at her master for not being there for her. She roared at her parents for leaving her. She roared at herself for not having the courage to face the fire. The roar dissolved, and with it her fears. Slowly anger replaced her fear until it was rippling through her body in thick waves, and her heart was fit to burst. She forced herself at the door, pressing her shoulder into the burning wood. She felt the fire biting into her shoulder blade, but didn’t stop. The door was weakening under her force and soon she heard the door creak and groan over the crackling of the hungry flames. She continued by using her claws, raking them down the door as the fire prowled closer like a Kie on the prowl. The door was deeply cracked, and with one more shove with her shoulder, it fell away into a large pile of burning wood and cinders. Rayne leaped through the doorway and raced across the lawn at an impossible speed for her injuries and burns. Slowing to a limp, she unconsciously headed toward the forest that lay over the swirling advance of lush green grass. The cold blades shimmered a dark, purple-black in the moonlight as they lapped at her feet like the waves of vast green sea. The trees steadily drew closer with every step in her limping gait. They called her in, their black silhouettes waving in the night’s light. Eyes stinging and blurring, she looked up to the tops of the trees. The pines that lay in front of her reached into the night sky toward the fading stars. Rayne thought that it looked like they were waving to the moon and thanking it for bringing the welcome break from the dryness of the unusually hot autumn day they had suffered through. Rayne cast a look back over her shoulder at the home she and her owner had lived in her since she was a cub. Ashamed, she looked at her feet, thinking of her master. It’s a good thing that he had gone out for the night, or else he would be gone along with everything else. With the thought of him being safe clearing away her some of her guilt, she slowly turned and limped into the forest. Rayne looked up. Clouded moonlight glittered through the canopy. A beam fell across her soot covered pelt, turning her radiant silver pelt white. Even though she walked on, she couldn’t take her blurry eyes off the moonlight on her pelt. I was the one thing that she knew to still be peaceful and in a small way she felt comforted. She didn’t see the cliff before it was too late. She tumbled down, yowling in a cracked, strained voice. Her side hit something and it tore a gash in her flank. Then it stopped. Cold ground pressed against her body. She could feel her hind leg twisted awkwardly as searing pain ran up it like electricity. Darkness rimmed her vision as she lay in a mangled, sooty pile. Even as a strange calm coursed through her body, a terrifying thought threatened to take over her mind. “So is this how I die?”
